About The Institute for Optimum Nutrition

THE INSTITUTE FOR OPTIMUM NUTRITION (ION) is an independent, not for profit educational charity whose purposes are:

The Institute does this by providing information in its own publications and through media contributions; by conducting various community 'outreach' programmes and events; and by providing educational courses currently ranging from the Home Study course to the Diploma in Nutritional Therapy.

At ION, we believe it is vital to cover all aspects of health, both orthodox and complementary, in order to achieve a complete understanding of the subject. Our activities focus on achieving optimum physical and mental health by a careful and thorough evaluation of an individual’s nutritional requirements.

ION Offices in Richmond, South West London

ION is based in Richmond, south west London, and was founded in 1984 by Patrick Holford with Dr Linus Pauling as Founding Patron. Having established ION as Europe's leading provider of nutritional therapy education, Patrick then left the Institute to establish his own highly successful ventures such as the Food for the Brain charity and the Brain Bio Centre. Patrick no longer has any involvement in the running of ION.

The facilities at ION include a comprehensive library, the ION clinics - Optimum Nutrition Clinic and ION Teaching Clinic as well as the education, marketing and administrative teams that run ION.

These resources, together with an excellent reputation, makes ION one of the most respected training bodies and health information resources of its kind in the UK. ION is a member of the Nutritional Therapy Council's Schools Forum, the CMA (Complementary Medical Association) and BANT ( British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy ).

Nutrition Therapy Diploma Course. This was the first course to specialise in all aspects of nutrition and health from both a holistic and scientific perspective. It sets the standard for nutritional analysis and consultation in the UK. Every year applicants for the course exceed intake and we are immensely proud that more than 1000 graduates have now completed the ION course to become DipION Nutritional Therapists, practising world-wide, from the UK and across Europe to New Zealand and South Africa.Nutritional Therapy diploma Course / Foundation Science Degree
