Patrick Holford BSc, DipION, fBANT, CNHC
While studying psychology, in the 70s Patrick Holford came across the research of three pioneers of nutritional medicine, Drs Carl Pfeiffer, Abram Hoffer and twice Nobel Prize winner, Linus Pauling. They had conceptualised the approach of ‘orthomolecular medicine’ (ortho means right) which Patrick renamed as Optimum Nutrition and founded The Institute for Optimum Nutrition, in 1984, with Linus Pauling as Patron. There he developed the process of nutritional therapy and trained the first generations of nutritional therapists. He left in 1998 to focus both on educating the public and, to that end, has written 40 books published in over 30 languages, and founded the Food for the Brain Foundation, to refocus on the critical importance of optimum nutrition in mental health at a time when mental illness is rising and both IQ and brain size is decreasing. He now runs Forest Barn Mountain Retreat in the Black Mountains of Wales as a space for people to transform their health using the principles of integral medicine, which respects that we are physical, chemical, psychological and spiritual beings.
