What is nutritional therapy? Article What is nutritional therapy? Nutritional therapy is classed as a complementary medicine and is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. It has evolved using the Functional Medicine model, which focuses on treating the underlying causes of ill-health, rather than simply addressing symptoms. This model is scientifically based, and looks at imbalances in diet and lifestyle which lead to poor health. Nutritional therapists recognise that each person is an individual with unique requirements. For this reason, they develop a personalised plan rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. What is nutritional therapy used for? A lot of clients come to nutritional therapy feeling quite desperate, having tried other options that haven’t worked. Some of the more common issues that clients suffer from include: colds and infections; digestive issues; extreme fatigue (tired all the time); female health; fertility concerns; food sensitivities; headaches and migraines; hormonal imbalances; immunity issues; preventative health; skin problems; sleep problems; stress and anxiety; thyroid issues and weight loss. However, some individuals are simply looking for support to enhance their general wellbeing. What does a nutritional therapy consultation look like? The nutritional therapist will usually start by taking a comprehensive case history from each client covering current and past health concerns, current and past diet and lifestyle and family health. They may also use biochemical laboratory testing to assess nutritional statuses. The nutritional therapist will then produce individualised recommendations on diet, specific nutrients and lifestyle, and often meal ideas, recipes and practical tips, with the aim to support health issues that have been identified.
