Expert Tutors, Innovative Teaching

Returning to education can open up a world of opportunities, but taking that step and managing your studies can be challenging at times. Teaching methods may have changed since you last studied, this may be a new subject to you, or you may have other commitments competing for your time.

Our courses are rigorous and challenging both in content and time commitment. That is why we work with you to help identify your support needs, so that you can focus on developing the skills you need to succeed.

Our tutors and lecturers have many years of experience and are active researchers, involved in the ongoing development of the discipline and the profession, advising on committees of the Professional and Standards bodies.

At ION, we recognise that students have their own learning styles and our courses are carefully designed to utilise a wide variety of academic and practical learning tools to support your own individual learning style, including: group work, role play, clinic work, audio, video, interactive e-units, workshops, personal tutoring, guided discussion and presentations.

Whether you are learning in-class or online, you will be supported by a range of carefully created, interactive materials and information via our virtual learning environment, RelION.

Personal tutoring, guided discussions (in class and online), and regular contact with module leaders via email and skype sessions will ensure that you get all the guidance and support you need, both academic and pastoral.

As an ION student, you can be assured that you are at the heart of what we do, whatever your mode of study. Our focus is to give you the skills to develop your critical thinking and ability to practise independently following your time with us.

At ION you will learn how to write for different audiences, research and source information, analyse and question ideas, think creatively with safe practice in mind, and construct logical arguments based on evidence to support your conclusions. You will also learn behaviour change skills such as motivational interviewing.

We will help you develop your clinical practice skills through role play and case scenarios, and through our Optimum Nutrition Training Clinic where you will work directly with clients, fully supported and supervised by our Clinical Practice Tutors.

Learning to learn

As part of our commitment to maximising your learning experience, we have embedded study skills within the curriculum of our courses. This is especially helpful for those that have been away from formal study for some time or want to build their academic skills.

Students also have access to our Study Skills Hub, a high-quality repository of open educational resources and in-house materials covering core academic skills including: writing, referencing, evaluation, critical and reflective thinking, and academic integrity.

More than just a course

In addition to expert teaching, the latest in e-learning options and study skills support, you will also have access to a range of extra-curricular activities to enhance your knowledge and experience.

In Year 1 you will experience being a client in the training clinic, this will give you a client-side perspective and an insight into their experience of practice. There are also opportunities to gain the perspectives of external speakers with specialist expertise during our guest lectures, panel debates and Q&A sessions.

We will also link you to companies that provide specialist products and services, including employers. Many of which offer CPD opportunities, placements, educational materials, technical advice, prizes and bursaries.

As part of the ION community you will receive discounts on our Short Courses programme and an e-version of our magazine Optimum Nutrition.
