The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes have an increasing visibility from charity awareness campaigns, research advances, celebrity profiles & hard work of practitioner & patient groups. However, time to diagnosis is still extensive for many, with many healthcare professionals requiring additional knowledge and understanding of the varied multi-system involving presentation. This course aims to shine a light on the spectrum of hypermobility conditions & the role health and nutrition professionals can play in supporting patients of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder & The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes.

This one-day course provides clinicians with the opportunity to start learning about the complex nature of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes through exploration and discussion of clinical considerations for appropriate referrals, support, and client safety.

Clinicians such as nutrition professionals may be missing the opportunity to identify those clients who potentially fulfil EDS criteria and need onward signposting for specialist referral, medical diagnosis, and support. For those practitioners who have worked with clients who have a hEDS/HSD diagnosis but underestimated the impact of hEDS/HSD on a client’s wider health may be compromising wellbeing.

This course will provide the chance to learn about the multi-system nature of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes It will then explore the potential challenges & mis-diagnosis clients & practitioners face in managing the symptoms of EDS/HSD. It aims to give practitioners guidance on best practice framed in the latest research for signposting clients and recommendations.

Finally, it will discuss the evidence & role of nutrition as part of multi-discipline, collaborative, patient centered care.

Examples of the questions it will answer;

  • Identify potential missed opportunities to signpost clients for appropriate assessment & support
  • Apply new research findings on EDS & comorbidities in your approach to practice by avoiding generic restrictive ‘diets’ and tailoring recommendations based on specific health concerns

Member of Diet & Nutrition Working Group – The International Consortium for The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders

Working in private practice for over five years has led Helen to specialize in supporting clients with musculoskeletal related complaints including hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. Combining nutrition support alongside a physical therapy clinic allows for collaborative management of patients, particularly those with MSK issues. Following qualifying as a Registered Nutritional Therapy practitioner, Helen undertook her MSc in Advanced Nutrition (Research & Practice) carrying out a piece of primary research entitled: “Nutritional Interventions for symptoms management in Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of patients’ lived experience” for her dissertation. 

Additionally, having focused clinical work and vast quantities of EDS focused CPD including several Ehlers-Danlos Society Project ECHO programs, Helen was accepted into Diet and Nutrition Working Group for The International Consortium on Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders. The working group is comprised of independent nutrition practitioners, working to identify areas of relevant research and best practice relating to nutrition to encompass the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and comorbid conditions.

How will I be taught?

ION’s courses reflect best practice for online teaching and learning practice.  We aim to offer a variety of interactive formats to support you with participating in online events.  We also provide regular review and recap sessions and encourage critical thinking and reflection. 

The course will include online presentations (maximum 20 mins) interspersed with individual exercises, recap sessions  and Q&A.
