Agenda

Life moves in rhythms — and so do our hormones. In this course, we explore how genetic variation shapes the way each person responds to, and regulates, the hormonal cycles that govern health across a lifetime. Drawing on the latest in nutrigenetics, Nutrigenetics and the Rhythms of Life examines four interconnected rhythms: the circadian interplay of cortisol and melatonin, the monthly ebb and flow of oestrogen and progesterone, the seasonal cycle of vitamin D and light, and the profound hormonal shifts that mark life’s key transitions — puberty, pregnancy and the postnatal period, perimenopause and menopause.

Agenda:

  • How genes and environment interact to entrain and train:
  • Circadian rhythms – the daily interplay of cortisol and melatonin
  • Monthly rhythms – the ebb and flow of oestrogen and progesterone
  • Seasonal rhythms – vitamin D and its light-dependent cycle
  • Life rhythms – hormonal shifts across puberty, pregnancy and the postnatal period, perimenopause and menopause
  • How receptor genes enable us to adapt to changing conditions through time, and the power of nutrigenetics to examine this
